Obtaining Utilities

Setting up an account with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is a straightforward procedure. An official representative of the company needs to present the company’s business licence, the passport of the person listed on the licence and a Dhs.1,000 deposit. If a business has special energy or water requirements, the procedure becomes more complicated and it is mandatory that the proprietors meet with DEWA officials to set up the utilities. DEWA’s new eServices has made it easier for businesses to manage their utilities payments and keep track of their dealings with DEWA.

Both Etisalat and du offer a number of voice and internet packages for the commercial use. Generally, businesses cannot choose which company will provide their services since Etisalat and du have jurisdiction over different areas of the city. However, both du and Etisalat provide products that enable businesses to access the service provider of their choice.

The procedure for activating telecommunication services with either Etisalat or du requires several documents, including the passport of the local service agent, the passport and residence permit of the owner if he or she is a non-GCC national, a copy of the trade licence, and an NOC from the Department of Economic Development if the business’s location is not stated on the licence. Depending on the circumstances, more documents may be needed. Payment of telecommunications utilities can be done online or through online banking services.
