Use solar energy to reduce your utility bills in Dubai
Individuals and companies in Dubai can now generate their own solar energy to reduce their electricity bills, by installing solar panels on their buildings.  The solar energy project is part of the Shams Dubai project by DEWA to support the Green Economy for Sustainable Development launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Solar electricity is produced from solar panels installed on your rooftops, so this system is useful for villa owners, freehold property owners, commercial and government entities.

Applying for the eService through DEWA is free, with DEWA bearing the costs for the bi-directional smart meter that measures the electricity to and from the electricity grid. The customer need to pay a connection fee (which varies depending on location), a one-time cost for the second meter (around AED 1,500) which measures the electricity generated by the solar unit. In addition, the customer needs to pay for the costs of consultation and fitting of solar panels, which must be done by a DEWA certified consultant. According to the CEO of Change Initiative Dubai, the estimated cost for a solar unit for a 3-5 bedroom villa is between AED 12,000 to 15,000 with the solar unit being usable for about 20 years.

The customer benefits by producing and consuming their own electricity. In case more electricity is produced, then this is automatically send back into the DEWA grid with the smart-meter crediting you against future consumption. In both ways, you are using green, renewable energy to reduce your utility bills in Dubai.

Steps involved in getting solar energy for your home/building in Dubai:
1.Customers need to hire a DEWA certified consultant, who will assess your home needs and apply for a No-Objection Certificate from DEWA. See list of DEWA certified consultants.

2.The consultant applies online by uploading the technical documents which are assessed by DEWA. Application is free and approvals take about a week for villas and between four and eight weeks for larger industrial systems. Apply for solar design online

3. If the application is approved, DEWA will advise on a connection fee, which once paid will lead to DEWA creating the network connections.

4. The consultant applies for approval from the concerned building authority, to ensure the solar panel construction and electrical layout is in line with safety regulations. Following this approval, the customer needs to fill out the online notification for electrical inspection and testing. Apply for solar inspection and connection online

5. DEWA installs the meters and you can start generating your own solar energy. You should then request for the online Performance Test Notification (to measure the energy generated) and sign the Connection Agreement with DEWA, which sets out the net metering agreement and responsibilities of both parties.
