Using Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro which began in 2009 offers state-of-the-art travel convenience. The metro network comprises 2 lines: the Red Line and the Green Line covering different routes and destinations. Metro fares are very reasonable, starting from just AED1.80 per journey. There is also a special cabin for women and children, as well as a silver and gold class travel.

All travellers need to purchase Nol cards which come in four categories: Red (single-journey), blue (personalized cards), silver and gold. You can plan your journey using the RTA's Wojhati (Arabic for journey planner) service which combines all forms of transport to plan your route in real-time. RTA has also introduced co-branded Visa credit and debit cards which can also be used as Nol cards. Called 'GO4IT' the gold and platinum cards are available from Emirates NBD Bank, the credit card is automatically linked to your Nol and Salik accounts.

Students (all nationalities) and senior citizens (any nationality 60 years of age or over) can use public transport including buses and the metro at a 50% discount in fares. Passengers with disabilities will be able to travel on all public transport free of cost.

All students, senior citizens and passengers with special needs must obtain personalized Nol Blue Cards from RTA to avail of discounted travel for a one-time payment of AED 70. Students between the ages of 5 and 23 can apply for the card online provided they are full-time students at accredited schools, colleges and universities in the UAE. They can either upload a scanned letter from their school/college, copy of their Emirates ID card and a recent photograph or submit to any ticketing counter at the Metro and bus stations. More details are available at the Nol Card website.

Dubai Metro operates on all days of the week. From Saturday to Thursday, it operates from 6 am to 11 pm and on Friday from 10 am to midnight.
