Using public buses

Bus services are operated on many routes linking various residential and the industrial areas with the central business districts as well as with the Metro. The fleet of buses are equipped with point to point timetables that provide the waiting passengers with time schedules of the bus services passing through specific bus stops. There are also night buses and some Inter-Emirate buses for travel to other emirates. Passengers can also obtain bus timetables, fares and connecting services either from bus stops or by calling the toll free phone 800 9090. The RTA has introduced air-conditioned bus stops to ease commuters' lives.

You can plan your journey using the RTA's Wojhati (Arabic for 'journey planner') service which combines all forms of transport to plan your route in real-time.

Students (all nationalities) and senior citizens (any nationality 60 years of age or over) can use public transport including buses and the metro at a 50% discount in fares. Passengers with disabilities will be able to travel on all public transport free of cost. Discounted and free passengers must purchase a personalized Nol Blue card for a one-time payment of AED 70.

All travellers need to purchase Nol cards before stepping on the bus. Nol cards are available at RTA outlets, some bus stations and at Dubai Metro stations. You need to have this card scanned at the beginning and at the end of the journey, to ensure you pay the correct fare. If you fail to scan your Nol card before exiting, you will be charged the full fare. Dubai has been divided into five zones, with fares ranging from Dhs1.80 to a maximum of Dhs6.50 for a single journey, based on zones covered. Also be careful of scanning your card twice while entering as it might mean you have exited. According to RTA, you need to check the information on the screen which tells you whether you checked in or not and how much you were charged. A sound indicates if you swiped correctly and finally a green light flashes for green to check in and when you scan out a red light flashes.

In case you have been over-charged, call RTA on toll-free 800-9090 and register your complaint. If the complaint is valid, the commuter will receive an SMS or phone call. He/she can then get an automatic refund from any parking machine. Simple tap the Nol card in the card slot and the amount will be refunded into the Nol card.

Nol cards can now be topped up online through the Nol website. Nol blue, silver or gold cards can be topped up online or at the counters with a minimum of AED 30 to a maximum of AED 500.
