Going on Hajj

Going on Hajj or annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca is the fifth pillar of Islam and a religious duty that must be carried out at least once in a life-time by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to go on Hajj.

The Hajj signifies the believer’s submission to almighty Allah and solidarity with all other Muslim people. During the Hajj, Muslims recall the memories of their ancestors and the lives of the prophets, scholars, pious and righteous people who walked the earth once and are now in paradise. For instance, one may remember stories from the lives of Ibrahim (Abraham) and his wife Hajar (Hagar), or the story of Ishmael who was to be sacrificed, the building of the Kaabah, the proclamation of Hajj to the people and the Prophet (PBUH), who lived in the region around Mecca, and the persecution that he was subjected to at the hands of the disbelievers of the Quraysh.

While Hajj starts at a specific date (From Zul Hijja 1) and continues till Zul Hijja 15, Umrah also known as lesser Hajj may be performed at any time round the year.
There are approximately 153 registered Haj operators in the UAE who are monitored and regulated by the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GEA). In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Hajj is the authority for implementation of all policies related to Hajj and Umrah. It coordinates with officials of Islamic countries and the heads of delegations of Hajj missions in preparation and for the hospitality of all pilgrims.
