Learn some basic Arabic phrases and responses

Both English and Arabic are the most widely spoken languages in the UAE, though because of its diverse expatriate population, visitors may also hear Urdu, Hindi or Pashtu. Arabic dialects are numerous, but several basic phrases are the same throughout the region.

The most common greeting in the Gulf is Salam alaykum (‘Peace be upon you’), to which the correct reply is Wa alaykum as-salam (‘And upon you be peace’). Some Other common greetings and the accepted replies are:

Inshallah -If Allah wishes
This phrase is used quite often in business and personal conversation, since all future success and events are dependent on Allah’s will.
 
Maashallah -What Allah wishes
This is used to praise or compliment something, usually for children’s birth, family’s well-being etc.
 
Mabrook - Congratulations
This is used for any kind of occasion to praise or congratulate someone.
